AMD Steps Up Stepping Release Feb 13, 2008 - Carl Bloor - Permalink

AMD is apparently preparing to release the new B3 stepping (version 3) of its Phenom processors as early as April this year. Peeps close to the company say its planning to dish out these new chips around April time this year to fix the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) bug in the microprocessor.

The TLB bug caused problems on the current B2 stepping of the processors. AMD issued a software patch to fix the problem but with a severe performance hit. The B3 stepping is expected to clear...

A new game studio by the name of Tyrant Studios has come out of the closet recently and it already has a project in the works. Named ESP the game is completely secret right now, no idea what platform or even game genre it will be. Still the studios talent comes from makers of Halo, Dungeon Siege 2 and the Battlefield games so we should see some pretty groovy stuff in the future.

PirateBay Block Backfires Feb 13, 2008 - Carl Bloor - Permalink

After a Danish ISP had blocked The Pirate Bay website the sites administrators have reported a 12% rise in Danish visitors since the block. The strange thing is that the workaround is very easy indeed. Simply using OpenDNS servers fixes the problem as the ISP has only changed the DNS record on their servers, nothing more.

Could we conclude from this unenthusiastic attempt to block the site that the ISP doesn't really want to comply fully with the Courts/RIAA/MPAA.

Maker of the popular anti virus software system, Grisoft has announced it will change its name to AVG Technologies USA, Inc. as they say people seem to know the AVG moniker much more than people know of the Grisoft name. Grisoft has already transitioned the name in the UK to AVG Technologies UK, Ltd. and this will complete the move.

MSI a pretty darn big Motherboard manufacturer has announced its releasing the first EFI BIOS for PC motherboards evar!
The clean looking interface sports not only nice looking eye-candy but also additional functionality such as online/live overclocking, various applications like web browsers and even has mouse support.

Of course theres a catch, you need to be running the x64 version of Windows Vista and the upcoming Service Pack 1 for Vista.

Internet Protocol Version 6 - The next step

ICANN president Paul Twomey explained to the BBC that ICANN is transitioning over to IPv6 in preparation for the global adoption of the new expanded addressing system in the near future when the need demands it.

nVidia has confirmed it is in talks to buy the physics processing unit creator Ageia. The talks are closed so no price or terms have been released to the press/public as yet, but its official and marks a fairly big move by the GPU giant.

Having been established in 2002, Ageia has been trying hard to get into the gaming market in both software and hardware. It has over a hundred titles on board and numerous hardware deals to bundle their physics processors into machines.

Microsoft Shakes Fist At vLite, Provides Alternative Vista Tips Feb 4, 2008 - Carl Bloor - Permalink

Microsoft is voicing its disapproval of the recent vLite tool that allows users to build their own customized and optimized version of Windows Vista.
Aside from losing tight control over the Vista installed base, Microsoft is (rightly) warning of possible sided effects of these custom Vista builds which may cause problems when it comes time to update Windows' various components and possibly as far as causing irreparable damage to the system.

J&W technologies, a motherboard manufacturer from mainland China that is hoping to impress European customers, has this week published results of its attempts to overclock the ATi graphics core (a 3200 HD) built into the latest AMD 780G chipset.

The company has managed to overclock the core, which normally clocks at 500MHz all tyhe way up to over 1GHz or 1023MHz. Tests resulted in a 3DMark 2006 score of over 2000 points all told. Not half bad if you consider this was running with simple...
