AMD Launches New Chips, A New Challenge to Intel Sep 10, 2007 - Sheri Bloor - Permalink

Quad Core
Advanced Micro Devices, the second-largest microchip maker, launched a new effort today to close the gap with Intel, the market leader, revealing its biggest technology upgrade in four years.

The new product, developed under the codename Barcelona, is a “quad-core” processor, which carries four calculating engines on one piece of silicon.

The chip is to be used in the server hardware used to store and process digital company information in corporate data centers.

AMD had made advances in the server market in recent years, only for Intel to hit back in 2006 with its own quad-core server processor — it has since sold nearly two million of the chips.

Barcelona, formally called the Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processor, is also expected to have knock-on effects for server makers keen to play chip makers off each other to cut component costs. Δ
