AMD to Provide Chips for Toshiba May 30, 2007 - Sheri Bloor - Permalink

Toshiba America Inc.
Toshiba announced Tuesday that AMD will start providing microprocessors for Toshiba. This will end Intels exclusive ties with Toshiba. This is an ongoing trend in the microprocessor world. H-P, Dell, and Acer have also started getting some chips from AMD. Intel is AMD's biggest competitor by far, providing 80% of all chips to these companies at this time.

Toshiba, the world's fourth-largest laptop maker, expects to put AMD processors in about 20 percent of the laptops it sells in the United States and Europe, which account for about 60 percent of its overall PC operations.

These laptops will roll off assembly lines this summer and will cost the consumer up $82 less then it's Intel counterparts.

"With PCs becoming commodity products, there seems to be a new way of thinking that competition should be introduced even in procurement of such core parts like processors as long as there are no major differences in product specifications," said Yoshihiro Shimada, an analyst for Macquarie Securities.
