Having played the Multiplayer Open Beta version of World in Conflict for almost a week now, I have decided to give my word on the game. So if you're not interested in war games and point & click baffunery, push off. This title brings the original concept of C&C tactical strategic gameplay with various types of units, available from a number of factions. Currently only USA and USSR are available in the beta for playing, however the medals/achievements screen (more on that later) shows the potential ability to play additional factions (NATO?)which may be available in the main or single player game when it comes to retail.

Like I said the current open beta only includes multiplayer gameplay, so its all online for now. We start the game with the usual options menu and hitting the only available option right now gives you the multiplayer screen. At this point you need to create a login using your email and a password. Once logged in we have the multiplayer home screen. Next step is to create a profile with the obligatory Uberl337 name. Down the left are various page buttons to view your profile and achievements(medals/badges) and to join or view a clan. Beneath that are the multiplayer options buttons and exit to main menu.

Center stage is the news window and if you select 'servers' from the left menu this turns into the server listing pane. There are currently around three to four hundred test servers available to play on at varying speeds. Many sponsored by intel.com and NGZ.de (NetGameZone) so getting a good server is easy.

To the right is a pretty well thought out social aspect to the game with a contact list populated not just with users you add (friends) but also acquaintances (players you meet in game or play against). Handy feature if your like me and suck at remembering names. Especially the ones with odd spelling/characters. From this panel you can IM users to setup matches or discuss joining a clan or exchange pancake recipes.
